A visit to the EDUCO sponsored school at Lalbaug - Mumbai 2010

I had been planning to visit the educo run school for a while .Today i visited to the school with iain mcdonald .
educo.ie

The school is run on the Muktangan system of education

Muktangan is an educational programme that offers alternatives to orthodox educational practices. The project seeks to offer a sustainable model of quality education at an affordable cost for the economically deprived sections of the society.

The school is run from the BMC School at Abyudaya Nagar. The school is in a really bad condition with cracks all over the place . EDUCO has about 7 teachers and 9 helpers . This school runs parallel to the Municial School .You can at once see the difference in the quality of education in the two systems. It was sad to see the other municipal kids running all over the place with no teachers around (the municipal school is understaffed)

The computer rooms were empty - the teaching is outsourced to a guy who has 7 teachers who teach all over mumbai - could not find any teachers there . As the teachers are also used to be BMC school as substitute teachers....

Iain has his heart in the right place and is very receptive to new ideas . Hope he makes a small difference in these kids lives.

You can reach the school via train
1) Western Railway - get down at Lower Parel - walk to the end of platform No 1 . Walk to the over bridge - walk to the right towards the easy - take a left on NM Joshi Marg - take a left on Mahadev Palav Marg - walk straight - you will come to JIji bhai marg - walk straight you will come to sai baba marg (sai baba path) - you will pass the Kalpatrau mansion on the left walk ahead of finlay and you will come to the municipal school (marathi shala) on the right .
2) Central Railway - Get down at Curry Road.

By taxi /car take a left after the  ITC Grand Central, Mumbai ( 287, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Road, Parel, Mumbai - 400 012) you will see FINLAY on the right going down the road further you will come to the school .

Bring light into the life of a Tribal Kid this Diwali

Sapna Kondar 8 years and Tanaji Bhangere 10 years are just like any other school going kids, who love Hindi movies, and struggle with Maths. Their dream is to become school teachers, with the students paying attention to them.

For Sapna and Tanaji, burning the midnight lamp is a reality and not a metaphor. Most villages in rural Maharashtra are subjected to 12-18 hour a day power cuts. This Diwali bring in light into the life of Sapna and Tanaji, Enable them to self empowered.

Donate or team up with other donors and gift a Solar/Crank powered lantern to a tribal kid.

The campaign will run for 3 weeks, starting from the 25th of Oct and end on the 11th of November, following which the lanterns will be handed out to the kids on 14th November (Children's Day!!!)

Formed in 1969, Mobile Creches (www.mumbaimobilecreches) is an organization devoted to the children of migrant construction workers in India. Some 30 million workers move around from site to site, often leaving the children without access to education and regular healthcare. Mobile Creches — which operates in Mumbai, Delhi, and Pune — provides childcare, medical attention, and teaching to these children. Mumbai Mobile Creches reaches approximately 5000 children in the city each year.
