Wrap a difference on Christmas for homeless old folk, women and children on the streets of Mumbai
Wouldn’t it be great if, for a change, you could be the reason for someone’s smile? What if you could be someone’s Santa this Christmas?
Turns out it’s not so difficult.
Come be part of a community that cares and shares a compassion for the homeless folks in our city. At Avatar, it’s people like you and us who care but just needed an opportunity to show it.
...
- What’s happening?
This Christmas, just look into your closet and pick out stuff you haven’t used in a while – we’re talking about bed linens, blankets and clothes – all in great condition. Believe us, someone will find a better use of it.
- Who are we talking about?
The homeless old folk, women and children on the streets of Mumbai.
- Here’s how it works
We will collect your stuff on Wed.15th December at various drop off points across the city, come by anywhere between 12.30 pm to 9.30 pm
Will update you about the drop off points (check this space)
We make stacks of all the clothes and linen
We have them gift wrapped and ready for distribution
We will be wrapping the gifts from 17th thru 19th Dec. (Friday thru Sunday) with you! (Will update you on the time and venue for this)
Distribution of the gifts on 20th thru 23rd Dec.
Updates on time and place of distribution soon
- Your role!
Keep us updated on how many clothes and linen you’ve collected so we can plan how many gifts we will give away.
Volunteer to help separate the clothes, make stacks and wrap them into gifts. That’s the best part!
Contribute cash to cover for expenses like ribbons, brown paper, transport etc.
Last but most important of all, come distribute the gifts with us!
- Why do we do what we do?
Simply because Christmas represents the time God gave us His only Son Jesus Christ. And that’s why we give gifts on Christmas! :)
**This is an active wall post, watch out for updates and keep us updated
on your participation.

JP Dabral - Tehri Dam transmission lines illegal tree felling
JP Dabral Citizen Journalist - IBN 7 - Illegal tree felling in Kandakhanikhal, Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand
Real Heroes Award for environment has been conferred on J.P.Dabral for his contribution to save trees and the environment. Dabral has single handedly forced the government to reduce the 90000 trees it was planning to fell for the construction of the transmission line from Tehri Dam. Nearly 85% of the trees were saved because of Dabral's effort. The timber lobby weaned away the people through threats, bribes and by exploiting their compulsions. Dabral continued the struggle by invoking the Supreme Court and stopped the felling of trees and at the same time ensured that there is no delay in the completion of the transmission line. It is pertinent to point out that most of the trees were over 150 to 200 years old.

Watch a movie with kids of Oscar Foundation on Childrens Day 14th Nov 2010
On 14th Nov 2010 as our country will celebrate Children’s Day, Oscar foundation which has been working with children for developing their social & education life through sports for the past three years would like to treat its kids with a fun day.
As most of you know, Oscar works with kids aged between 7 to 19 years of age. Some of these kids have never gone outside let alone seen a movie in a cinema. With Rs 3 to Rs 5 the kids get as pocket money each day, which hardly suffices their food cost, they cannot afford to see a movie in cinema.
Oscar would like to treat the kids on this special day, by taking them for the movie Golmaal 3. I am sure, you would agree with me, when I say this movie is a laughing riot and the kids would love it.
We come here to ask for your help to help us gift a fun time to these kids. The cost for one kid to the cinema (with transport + samosa) is Rs 100. We would be very pleased; if you would come and join the Oscar kids for the movie and also help us support one (or more) kid’s entertainment. If any of you is interested to join us or also help contribute for one kid’s entertainment.
please RSVP to Ashok or Anil before Saturday evening 6.00pm (contact below). Also if you are interested to know more about Oscar’s program or its current progress, please write to us.

You are invited to experience in person the incredible journey of leading social entrepreneur Shaheen Mistry, founder of Akanksha. Shaheen will share her inspirational story with Akanksha - what triggered the idea, her main challenges and achievements, and lessons learned along the way. The talk will be followed by an informal Q & A session to generate meaningful discussion, mutual learnings and inspiration!
Akanksha's story:
Thousands of slum children needed and wanted to be educated. There were thousands of college students who had the energy, enthusiasm and time to teach. There existed pockets of available spaces located in schools that seemed ideal teaching environments. The simple idea then, was to bring together the three - kids, student volunteers and spaces - in schools for less privileged children run by college students.
RSVP at bombay.hub@unltdindia.org or call us on: 022 3222 0475. Entrance for this talk is 200 INR, please note there are limited spaces available.

sneha mumbai - Society for Nutrition, Education and Health Action
We provide health services through OPDs for the local slum population. We provide holistic health care to senior citizens at preventative and curative levels as well as with social, recreational and skills-oriented activities. In addition, we work with adolescent girls from slum communities to educate them about health, nutrition, & life skills and to train them in skills that will give them opportunities to earn higher incomes to support themselves and their families.
